Science Confirms Honey is The Best Natural Antibiotic

What health enthusiasts and alternative-health practitioners have known for a very long time has now become scientifically proven– honey is the best natural antibiotic that can be used to combat antibiotic resistance.

Honey has antibacterial, antimicrobial and antiviral properties which makes it one of the best natural antibiotics. In fact, when applied topically honey has the ability to destroy many superbugs, including MRSA.

Despite this, honey’s ability to fight bacteria has been considered an old wives’ tale by most doctors and scientists.  However, now, after numerous studies and documented practical experiences, the scientific and medical community are changing their opinion.

What the Research Says

When producing honey, bees also produce a protein known as defensin-1, which they add to the final product. This protein acts as a germ-killing agent and has great potential to save us from antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

According to Susan M. Meschwitz, Ph.D., honey can provide an osmotic effect which is when water is drawn from bacteria cells, making all pathogens dehydrated and eventually dead. Honey is successful in treating various severe wounds, including pressure sores, ulcers and infected surgical wounds. In fact, honey has saved many patients who have faced amputations due to ulcers and sores.

Another researcher, Peter Molan, a biochemist who has spent more than 25 years studying natural antibiotics such as honey, explains that manuka honey has the most potent antibacterial properties. Manuka honey comes from manuka plant in New Zealand, and it’s one of the purest honeys in the world, especially high in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.

According to Molan, manuka honey can destroy even the most antibiotic-resistant bacteria and provide better effects in wound treatment than pharmaceutical products.

How to Use Honey

Whether you need to treat a topical wound or you just want to boost your immunity and take care of your health, honey is your friend. Rich in vitamins B2, B3, B5, A and C, as well as iron, zinc, copper, iodine, calcium and magnesium, honey can help your body heal itself faster and more efficiently.

But always make sure you’re using raw, organic honey, or even better – manuka honey.
