When NOT to Consume Ginger

Used for more than 5000 years, ginger is one of the safest, healthiest spices one could use. With numerous health benefits, including boosting the immune system and metabolism, treating cough and sore throat, headaches, digestive issues and nausea, ginger is truly a superfood. However, as with everything, this spice is not for everyone; in fact, consuming ginger can be quite dangerous in certain situations.

Read on to find out when ginger should be avoided.

1.    If You Are Underweight

Consuming ginger can fire up the metabolism and suppress appetite, which is why it’s so great for losing weight. But for this reason, if you’re struggling with maintaining or gaining weight, ginger should be avoided. Furthermore, if you’re already underweight, consuming lots of ginger can lead to hair loss and irregular menstrual cycles.

2.    If You Are Pregnant

Because ginger is somewhat of a natural stimulant, it’s best to avoid it during pregnancy. Consuming it can lead to premature contractions, which in turn can lead to pre-term labor and even miscarriage.

3.    If You Have a Blood Disorder

Since ginger is a stimulant, it increases blood circulation and blood flow to the organs. This is in general a good thing, however, if you’re suffering from a blood disorder called hemophilia, ginger should not be consumed. Same thing goes for if you’re on blood thinning or blood clotting drugs.


4.    If You’re Taking Certain Medication

Ginger can increase or decrease the effect of certain medications. For example, it increases the effects of aspirin but decreases the effects of blood coagulants. Consuming ginger can also alter the effects of beta-blockers, insulin and diabetes medications. Furthermore, ginger can also impact the way the body absorbs iron supplements.
