Canker sores or aphthous ulcers are small, benign ulcers that develop on soft tissues such as inside of lips, cheeks, or on tongue and gums. Although pretty harmless, canker sores can be annoying and painful.
Thankfully, there are numerous things one can do to get rid of them. In fact, if you want to eliminate canker sores, you don’t even need to use any medication– things you probably have in your kitchen can do the trick.
What Causes Canker Sores
The exact cause of canker sores is not known, although biting your lips, braces and piercings are some of the things you can blame. But besides these obvious offenders, there are other possible causes of canker sores:
- Hormonal changes
- Vitamin deficiencies,
- Weak immune system,
- Inflammatory bowel problems,
- Celiac disease,
- HIV or AIDS.
How to Eliminate Canker Sores
Because most canker sores are small, they usually go on their own in a week or two.
But a week or two of pain is no fun– so, we have prepared several remedies you can try in order to get rid of them.
- Chamomile Tea
Chamomile is known for being anti-inflammatory and calming. Thanks to its compound bisabolol, chamomile can reduce pain and speed up the healing process of canker sores.
Just prepare a cup of chamomile tea, but instead of throwing the bag in the trash – keep it. First, swish the tea in your mouth for a minute or two, spit it out, and then take the chamomile tea bag and press it directly against the sore for about 5 minutes.
You can do this 2-3 times per day.
- Ice Remedy
Sucking on ice cubes can reduce inflammation of canker sores. This is because ice slows down blood flow to the ulcer and therefore reduces the swelling and pain. Just take an ice cube or two and suck on it a few times a day.
- Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is antibacterial, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory – in other words, perfect for getting rid of canker sores. Just take a bit of coconut oil and dab it onto the sore. Preferably, you should use a cotton swab to dab the oil and use lots of it (coconut oil). Do this as many times as you can in a day.
