Avocados are one of the healthiest fruits – chock full of healthy fats, fiber, vitamins and minerals, they’re an amazing fruit that should be a part of everyone’s diet. But did you know that avocado seeds are just as healthy as the fruit itself? It’s true – these seeds are richer in antioxidants than many fruits and vegetables.
Health Benefits of Avocado Seeds
Avocado seeds contain saponins, alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins and glycosides . They’re also rich in fiber and fatty acids, vitamins and minerals such as iron, magnesium, zinc, potassium, calcium and phosphorus.
Despite these nutrients, avocado seeds are not recommended by The California Avocado Commission – they think people shouldn’t eat them due to insufficient scientific evidence. However, a recent study from the Pennsylvania State University suggests otherwise. This study found that avocado seeds are rich in phenolic antioxidant compounds that can:
- Lower high cholesterol, especially LDL,
- Lower high blood pressure,
- Reduce overall inflammation, including joint inflammation,
- Help control diabetes and insulin resistance,
- Strengthen the heart,
- Boost the immune system.
In fact, one study has found that over 70% of total antioxidants of avocados are found within the seeds!
Avocado Seeds and Anti-Cancer Properties
Besides that list of truly impressive health benefits, avocado seeds are also found to have anti-cancer properties.
A study conducted by researchers at the University of Antioquia, in Medellin, Colombia, has found that the extract of avocado seed and fruit has a pro-apoptotic effect on leukemia cells. Apoptosis, by the way, is a process of programmed cell death; in other words, avocado seeds can literally kill leukemia cells!
But that’s not all – avocado seeds also contain a phytochemical flavonol, which is a powerful antioxidant, shown not only to boost the immune system but to reduce tumor growth as well.
So next time you eat avocados – make sure you eat the seeds as well.
